[Heavily edited info, based on a posting by Markus Illenseer on Usenet, who
played with one at the CeBIT show.]
The A600 looks like an A500 stuffed into a C64 sized case: ~14x9x3
inches.
The A600HD has a built-in 2.5" IDE hard disk. Unknown if it's DMA or
not.
The numeric-keypad is missing, the cursor keys have been moved just
right of the ALT-key, the Help-Key is moved next to the F10-Key, DEL is
near BS.
The floppy drive is still on the right, albeit at a slight slope. The
mouse and joystick connectors are also there.
On the left side is a ~2" hole for "PCMCIA bus" flash memory cards,
which can be copied to as a device and taken from machine to machine.
This is the only "expansion port" on the A600.
On the rear are the usual connectors for monitor, serial, parallel,
sound, power and floppy. New are: TV-Modulator (Antenna) and
Composite-Video-Output (FBAS).
On the bottom is a memory expansion cover; appears to be non-A500
compatible. Stock memory is 1 megabyte of ChipRAM; total RAM expansion
is to 10 megabytes.
Inside, all chips (even the custom ones) are surface-mount. The
natural first comment was: "it'll be VERY tough to replace a blown CIA
chip."
KS ROM is v37.300 and includes driver(s) for the flash RAM port.
WorkBench 2.1 is v38.17.
The poster noted that the programs used locale.library, and from then
on they had German menus and requester/program text. They also noticed
a sound.prefs, postscript.prefs and crossdos.prefs.
Also, mountlists are now supposedly obsolete... you simply have to copy
an icon from a new drawer called Storage into Devs.
New device CC0: was the flash RAM, which could be formatted either as
RAM: or as a "Pseudo-HD."
A600 Technical Briefs:
----------------------
- CPU 68000, 7.14 Mhz (NTSC), 7.09 Mhz (PAL) - 1 MB of chip RAM - Denise
8373 - Fat Agnus 8375 (up to 2MB of chip RAM) - Paula 8364 - Single chip
processor 8570 (keyboard) - Kickstart ROM 2.05 (37.300) / Workbench 2.05 -
2 x CIA 8520 interface chips - FBAS Logic to connect VCRs and TVs via SCART
or cinch connectors - built in HF modulator for connection of TVs via
antenna jack - Flash Memory Card port - NEW Gayle Chip - Built in IDE bus
The A600 is very compact and small. It lacks the numeric keypad. Instead of
the usual expansion port of the A500 there is a flash memory card slot on
the left side. It will hold cards with up to 128MB. All of the components,
except the Kickstart ROM are SMDs. That means no flicker fixers or any
other cards that use chip slots cannot be use in the A600. Since there is
no expansion port, nothing that uses the old A500 expansion port can be
used.
The Memory port of the A500 is also missing. The Gayle chip is the only new
custom chip. It combines the functions of the former Gary with the logic
for the new flash memory port and the IDE bus interface.
Kickstart and Workbench 2.05 are, according to Commodore, only offered in
the A600. The machine is compatible to the A500+.
The A600HD includes 2 1/2" hard disks from 20 to 180 MB. The price of the
A600 will be about the same as for the A500+.
The A600 was shown in detail in the magazine, inside and out. So at least
that system has passed the "rumor" status.
